Itinerary
Day 1: Day 1 — Tbilisi: Old Town & Welcome Supra
Meet your guide at Tbilisi airport and transfer to your boutique hotel in the historic centre. After a short rest we begin a slow walk through Abanotubani's sulphur baths, climb to Narikala fortress for sunset over the Kura river, and descend through the Bridge of Peace to Sioni Cathedral. The day closes with a Supra — Georgia's signature feast — in a vaulted cellar, hosted by a local tamada who …
Day 2: Day 2 — Mtskheta: Where Georgia Became Christian
A 20-minute drive north brings us to Mtskheta, Georgia's spiritual capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We climb to Jvari Monastery (6th century) for the iconic view over the confluence of the Aragvi and Kura rivers, then visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, said to house the robe of Christ. On the way back we stop at Chateau Mukhrani for a tasting of pre-Soviet noble wines. Evening is yours in T…
Day 3: Day 3 — Kazbegi: The Georgian Military Highway
Today we drive one of the world's most cinematic mountain roads — the Georgian Military Highway, built by Russian engineers in the 19th century. We stop at Ananuri fortress reflected in the Zhinvali reservoir, take in the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument with its mosaic-clad amphitheatre over the gorge, and cross Jvari Pass at 2,395m. After lunch in Stepantsminda (Kazbegi town) we drive (or hik…
Day 4: Day 4 — David Gareja: Monasteries on the Desert Frontier
After breakfast in the mountains we return to Tbilisi and continue south-east into the semi-desert. David Gareja is a complex of cave monasteries founded by David of Gareja, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers, in the 6th century. We visit the active Lavra monastery, then hike (about 90 minutes round-trip) over the ridge to Udabno where 9th-century frescoes look out across the steppe to the Azer…
Day 5: Day 5 — Uplistsikhe: The Lord's Fortress & Farewell
Our final day heads west to Uplistsikhe — literally 'the Lord's Fortress' — a cave city carved from the rock between the 1st millennium BC and the 13th century AD. Walk through pagan altars, a Christian basilica, the queen's hall, a Roman-style theatre and the wine cellars where Georgians have made qvevri wine for three thousand years.
